In this issue, I’m diving into a list of music website discoveries. From dynamic clocks set with the time of day to uncovering the secrets behind sampled tracks with Who Sampled, I've got an eclectic lineup that caters to every music lover.
Join me as I explore Setlist.fm, your go-to guide for concert prep, and navigate through the genre landscape with Music Map, unveiling artists with similar vibes. Don't forget to rediscover hidden gems through Spotify's 'Similar Artists' feature.
Let the music adventure begin!
The Pudding’s Clocks
The Pudding offers 4 different dynamic clocks set to music. This is more for music lovers but dang these are cool. The one that caught my attention several months back is the clock that plays songs to match the current time of day - all 24 hours! The songs have the current time in the song’s title.
The second clock I love (being from Montana with many small towns) has a clock time that matches the populations of towns in the U.S.
Who Sampled
Ever hear a song and think to yourself - dang, you know I have heard this song before today! You probably have. Who Sampled is a website that will give you the answer.
Search for a song on Who Sampled and the website will give you a list of songs that the song you searched for sampled.
Example: I searched for the song “Thank You (Not So Bad)” by Dimitri Vegas.
And…Bam! You get the answer! “Thank You” by Dido.
BTW, sorry. There are many ads on the website which is quite distracting. However, I look past them because the site is so cool.
Setlist.fm
I have heard about this website from a few DJ friends in the past but I want to make sure everyone knows about this website.
Scenario: You have an upcoming concert you are going to. Let’s say Ed Sheeran’s Mathematics Tour. You are a big fan but his catalog is so extensive that you do not know all of his songs by heart. So, you go to setlist.fm to find out what songs Sheeran is playing on his tour. You create a Spotify playlist of the potential concert’s setlist. Now, you can listen to the songs in the weeks leading up to your concert so you can understand the songs better - and sing along!
Music Map
Let’s say you have a favorite band. However, you know only a few of their songs. Yes, you can play the band’s most popular songs on your favorite music streaming service. But, who else do they sound like?
Scenario 2: Let’s say you are a huge Led Zeppelin superfan. You would like to know some modern artists that have the same vibe and feel as Zeppelin. Who are they?
Go to Music-Map and search for a musician (like Led Zeppelin).
Now, you have a graphic (map) of similar artists to the band or musician you originally searched for above.
Of course, you get Queen, Pink Floyd, and The Rolling Stones. However, you also get the modern band, Greta Van Fleet.
Spotify’s Similar Artists
If you are like me, you sometimes forget about this feature within Spotify - similar artists.
Let’s say you are creating a personalized playlist for your wedding’s cocktail hour and/or when guests are enjoying their meals. You have a favorite musician or band and want to create a playlist of the same style of music and vibe.
Search for your music artist on Spotify. (I searched for the band Neon Trees).
You will see a search result on the artist’s profile of a list of popular songs they have released.
Then, scroll down to the section “Fans Also Like” section and click on the View All link.
NOW, you have an awesome list of similar artists that are like the original music artist you searched for at the beginning!
Do you have a favorite music-related website that you love and want to share with everyone? Please comment below or reply to this email.
Cheers!

Big fan of Setlist. I use it for current concerts I go to so I can print out the setlist. The next level is being able to dive back into old shows and find the setlist. That immediately brings back a lot of memories. Great website!
Todd from In The Mix Pro DJ mentioned - This is a really cool site that will blow you away with all the music categories and samples of each!
