Billboard Charts

Billboard's first music chart, the "National List of Best Selling Retail Records", was published on July 27, 1940. The chart was based on information from national retailers, including Sears, Roebuck & Co., and J.B. Branford Piano Co. It covered retail sales, sheet music sales, jukebox song selection, and radio play.

The first number-one song on the chart was "I'll Never Smile Again" by Tommy Dorsey.

Billboard Hot 100 Chart

The Billboard Hot 100 songs chart premiered on August 4, 1958, with Ricky Nelson's “Poor Little Fool”.

Since the 2010s, streaming services have become a major factor influencing the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Enjoy a Spotify playlist that is kept current with all the Billboard Hot 100 #1 songs.

Listen to the playlist on Spotify as there are 1,172 songs and counting! (No, this is not my playlist)
