🎵 A Modern Black Artists Cocktail Hour (2021–2025)
Songs released from 2021-2025 by African American artists for a cocktail hour playlist.
When a DJ recently asked for a cocktail hour playlist featuring Black musicians for a corporate event, I didn’t see it as a political statement; I saw it as a mark of great curation. It was about relevance. The goal was to provide a soundtrack that the guests in attendance could truly connect with, creating an atmosphere where the music feels like a natural extension of the room.
Personally, this has become one of my favorite sets to listen to. The “sweet spot” for a cocktail hour is a specific middle ground: you don’t want slow songs that rock people to sleep, but you’re not trying to start a dance floor just yet. You want a vibe.
My usual rule of thumb is to never play a song that no one knows. However, I believe there is a bit more leeway during the cocktail hour. Since the music acts as a sophisticated backdrop for conversation, it’s the perfect time to introduce fresh, soulful tracks that guests might not have on their everyday playlists but will definitely “feel” as they socialize.
Pro-Tip for DJs:
When playing these newer tracks, keep an eye on the “nod factor.” If you see guests subconsciously nodding their heads while they talk, you’ve hit the mark. You’re looking for a collective pulse that makes the room feel alive.
