Why would I want to share the most popular Spotify playlists in a newsletter that focuses on wedding music? Well, these playlists have the largest following and influence what songs are played on their platform.

That being said, playlists such as RapCaviar (a playlist highlighting the new and trending names in hip-hop) gained their growth through human curation. Historical influences include the song ‘Bodak Yellow’ by Cardi B in 2017. The track hit #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 despite little radio support. Her team credited RapCaviar to its success. As a result, entrusted Spotify playlists were replacing favored radio stations.

In 2020, Spotify realized a preference for AI-generated playlists. Thus, it moved many playlists from individual curators to AI. The result today? Many major labels noticed a shift impacting the reach of songs from big playlists with streams dropping off by over 50% in just a year.

Spotify has also shifted some human-curated playlists to personalized AI versions, including selections with seven-figure followings, like Housewerk and Indie Pop.

Spotify, in 2023, launched AI DJ, which offers personalized playlists and commentary in an AI voice. Look out for more AI features within Spotify in 2024!
