What it is
The Wedding Music Canon covers the 1950s through the 2010s, organized by decade and then by genre. 1,875 entries across 44 sections. Every song carries the year, the artist, the title, and a verified fact drawn from chart history or cultural context. Not a review. Not my opinion about whether it is a good record. Something you can actually use in a room.
How songs got in
Two doors, and only two.
The Fame Door. The record charted. It earned mass recognition, and that recognition still holds.
The Function Door. The record owns a job at a reception that nothing else does. It may have never troubled the charts. It gets in anyway, because when you need that specific thing, this is what you reach for.
Nothing is in this book because I like it. I left out records I love. I put in records I have played a thousand times and would happily never hear again.
What it isn’t
It is not a playlist. Playlists expire.
It is not ranked, because ranking wedding songs against each other is a category error. The 1955 instrumental that saves a cocktail hour and the 2013 track that fills a floor in eight bars are not competing for the same job.
And it is not organized by artist. About 1,000 of the 1,333 artists in the book appear exactly once. Recognition at a wedding attaches to records, not catalogs. There is an artist directory in the back, and it is the least useful section in the whole thing.
Why it exists
I started my DJ company in 1993 and kept my love of music and weddings. The thing I kept running into was the absence of a shared text. A pro with fifteen years and a pro with fifteen weddings could not have a real conversation about a song, because there was nothing to point at. No common reference. Nothing to disagree with.
Now there is one.
Argue with it. That is what a canon is for.
