đ” The Power of 6: How to Build a Fail-Proof Wedding Set from 6 Must-Plays
Using the "Power of 6" to turn couple requests into a seamless Open Format night.
Weâve all been there: you get a list of requests from a couple that feels like a random shuffle of a 2005 iPod.
How do you turn a handful of songs into a cohesive night?
While listening to a presentation by DJ Hapa (visit The DJ Coach), I was inspired to create a game-changing strategy for prepping wedding playlists.
Step 1: The Foundation of 6
Start by asking your couple for six must-play songs. These are the ânon-negotiablesâ for their cocktail hour, dinner, or dancing.
Step 2: The +/- 4 BPM Multiplier
For every song the couple provides, select 5 similar tracks. This transforms 6 requests into a robust 36-song library.
The secret ingredient? The plus/minus 4 BPM Rule.
By keeping your additions within four beats per minute of the original track, you ensure that the energy stays consistent and, more importantly, the songs are easily mixable.
Visit Song BPM for a BPM source.
Pro Tip: Harmonic Mixing (The Camelot Wheel)
To make your transitions truly âinvisible,â look at the Camelot Key of your must-play song. If your base track is 8A, look for your five additions in 8A, 7A, 9A, or 8B.
This is known as Relative Key mixing. It ensures the melodies of two different songs donât fight each other during the blend.
Pro Tip: The âDouble Timeâ Trick
What do you do when you want to jump from a slow, soulful cocktail vibe like Fleetwood Macâs âDreamsâ (64 BPM) directly into a high-energy house track like Calvin Harrisâs âSummerâ (128 BPM)?
The Math: 64 BPM X 2 = 128 BPM
These songs are rhythmically compatible. To the listenerâs ear, the beats will align perfectly, even though one song is twice as fast as the other.
How to execute: While the 64 BPM track is playing, match the â2â and â4â beats of your 128 BPM track to the main pulses of the slow song.
The Result: A seamless âenergy explosionâ that transitions the room from a sway to a jump in a single beat.
Step 3: Setting the âInâ and âOutâ
Once you have your 6 groups of 6, donât just let them play. Identify the best mix-in and mix-out points. Set these as Hot Cues or Memory Cues in your software. This allows you to jump between âcratesâ of music without having to fumble for the next track.
Step 4: Reading the Room
This isnât a âset it and forget itâ playlist. This structure provides you with six ready-to-use mini-sets (crate). Use your DJ superpowers to read the crowd. If the "Classic Funk" crate isnât landing, you have five other directions to pivot to instantly.
Step 5: Mastering the âTempo Jumpâ
Since this is an Open Format list, youâll eventually need to jump from a 100 BPM pop set to a 125 BPM EDM set. Donât just slam it. Use a Transition Track (a song that shifts BPM mid-track) or a âPower Dropâ.
The Pro Move: Use an Echo-out effect on the outgoing track and drop the new trackâs âhookâ right on the 1-beat. It signals a fresh energy shift rather than a mistake.
