The best aspect of a great sing-along song is that it is ageless. The song is about uniting guests, encouraging participation without asking and creating a fun atmosphere. Every guest gets the opportunity to join in and make a memorable moment. Music has so much power!

The simplicity of sing-along songs, with well-known song lyrics, is universal. Everyone can participate, no matter their singing ability. It’s all about creating lifelong memories.

I recommend DJs and musicians not wait until the dancing part of the reception to play them. You can play them during cocktail hour and even dinner for extra drama. Imagine guests tapping their toes and singing along to “Killing Me Softly With His Song” by The Fugees, “I Want It That Way” by the Backstreet Boys, or even the classic “I Got You Babe” by Sonny and Cher.

Plus, if played before dancing, it will give the DJ a chance to discern what music will work best for party time. If guests don’t participate and groove to the songs, then the style of music should be skipped for dancing. (Learn more about reading a room.)

A great icebreaker! Typically at weddings, many family and friends have not seen each other in years and can be a bit nervous to get out on the dance floor. Sing-along songs can help break the ice, encourage interaction, and cultivate a sense of togetherness.

You don’t have to stick to my list of songs either. Ask the wedding couple and guests if there are any songs they love to party to and sing the lyrics as loud as possible. You may get some hidden gems.

Before I get to my list of songs, one final mention of when to consider playing a sing-along song is at the close of the reception. It will bring all guests together sharing one final memory with a lasting impression.
